AIM: To observe the therapeutic effect of combined treatment of electroacupuncture and hyperbaric oxygen for the patients with protracted coma (PC), and its influence on the recovery of their neurological function. METHODS: Totally 42 PC patients after brain injury, who were treated within 24 hours after episode, were selected from the Department of Neurosurgery, Second Affiliated Hospital of Medical College, Shantou University. All the patients were randomly divided into three groups: drug+acupuncture group (group A), drug plus hyperbaric oxygen group (group B) drug plus hyperbaric oxygen plus acupuncture group (group C), and they were treated with acupuncture, hyperbaric oxygen or hyperbaric oxygen combined with acupuncture respectively for the same course on the basis of routine drug treatment. The changes of neurological function indexes of the patients were assessed with the Glasgow coma scale (GCS) and Glasgow outcome scale (GOS) before and after treatment, and the results were compared and analyzed. RESULTS: The scores of GCS and GOS were similar among the 3 groups before treatment. After treatment, the scores of GCS and GOS in group C were 7.43 +/- 1.87 and 4.46 +/- 0.82, very significantly higher than those in group A (6.50 +/- 2.28, 4.07 +/- 1.01) and group B (6.00 +/- 1.88, 4.12 +/- 0.70) (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The comprehensive treatments of drug, acupuncture and hyperbaric oxygen have important significance in improving the curative effects of patients with PC and accelerating the recovery of their neurological function.
