AIM: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture at acupoints of new hemiplegic and yangming channel on motor dysfunction of patients with cerebral infarction, and analyze its therapeutic mechanism. METHODS: Prospectively comparative observation was performed in the cerebral infarction patients hospitalized in Yongchun Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 1999. Based on the treatment of speen, electroacupuncture was performed on patients with even numbers (observation group) and Chinese drug on patients with odd numbers (control group) until October 2002. There were 73 cases in each group. The improvement in motor function and treatment duration were observed. RESULTS: Among 73 cases in the observation group, there were 44 cases of severe dysfunction, 18 of moderate dysfunction and 11 of mild dysfunction before treatment, and 4, 11, and 58 after treatment respectively; in the control group, there were 42, 19, and 12 respectively before treatment, and 16, 14 and 43 respectively after treatment. There were significant difference in the two groups (p < 0.01). The improvement in muscle strength was better in the observation group as compared with the control group (Chi2 = -6.272, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Early electroacupuncture at acupoints of new hemiplegic and yangming channel is effective in improving motor function and muscle strength of patients with cerebral infarction, and it is worth spreading.
