AIM: To explore the effect and value of acupuncture on the treatment of cerebral palsy (CP), with the objective indices of skull ECT and development quotient. METHODS: Totally 150 patients (aged 1.5 to 7.0 years) with spastic CP were included in the clinical research of acupuncture. Group A (n = 50) was treated with head acupuncture and head acupuncture, while group B received the physiotherapy of Bobath and Vojta, and group C was treated with both the acupuncture and physiotherapy. RESULTS: The total effective rates in group A and C were significantly higher than that in group B. After therapy, the values of development quotient in group A and C were significantly higher than that in group B. The improve rates of CT brain dysplasia and atrophy in group A and C were significantly higher than that in group B (p < 0.05 to 0.01). The recover to normal rates of ECT brain blood stream in group A and C were. obviously higher than that in group B (p < 0.01). The results of TCD after therapy were better than those before therapy in group A (PI 1.19 +/- 0.19 and 1.01 +/- 0.16; VP 132.92 +/- 17.14 cm/s and 139.63 +/- 14.64 cm/s) and group C (PI 1.18 +/- 0.24 and 0.91 +/- 0.19; VP 131.84 +/- 15.93 cm/s and 139.68 +/- 15.66 cm/s) (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can significantly increase the brain blood stream and ameliorate metabolism of brain cell, improve brain function of part or complete compensation in children with CP, and it has a certain promotion to the repair of brain tissue and plasticity of function.
