PURPOSE: Therapeutic golf rehabilitation (TGR) is an approach integrating physiotherapy and golf. The primary objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the effects of TGR on golf performance, standing balance, and quality of life in persons at least 6 months after stroke. METHOD: Participants received either 6 weeks of TGR or 6 weeks of hand therapy followed by 6 weeks of TGR. Golf performance measures included clubhead velocity, swing arc length, and wrist angular velocity. Balance was assessed functionally using the Berg Balance Scale and the Chedoke-McMaster Postural Control Inventory and physiologically using force platform measures of sway and electromyographic recordings from lower extremity muscles. Quality of life was measured with the Sickness Impact Profile. These outcome measures were assessed at intake, after therapy, and at an 8-week follow-up. RESULTS: Golf performance, functional balance, and quality of life were significantly improved after TGR in comparison with hand therapy, but physiologic balance was not. Improvements were maintained at the 8-week follow-up testing. CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrates the possibility for unique combinations of sport and neurologic physiotherapy.
