In a group of 99 middle aged men (40 to 55 years) who had survived their first infarction, a study was made of the influence of a rehabilitation program of brief duration on mortality and morbidity during the five subsequent years. Forty-eight men of this group, selected at random, participated in a rehabilitation program lasting 6 weeks; the other 51 served as the control group. The rehabilitation group and the control group were managed, assisted and controlled by the same physician in the same way in all other respects. In the group as a whole, no influence of the size of the infarction on mortality and morbidity could be established. During the first 5 years after the first infarction, 8 of the 99 patients died: 5 in the control group and 3 in the rehabilitation group. In view of the low mortality and the consequently small numbers this difference is not statistically significant. If the morbidity groups severe angina pectoris and recurrence of the myocardial infarction are combined with mortality, a statistically significant difference emerges, in favour of the rehabilitation group. This difference remains demonstrable if only these two forms of morbidity are taken into account without the mortality.
