AIM: To explore the influence of early rehabilitation on the activities of daily living (ADL) in hemiplegic patients after stroke. METHODS: Totally 78 hemiplegic patients within 3 weeks after stroke were randomly divided into rehabilitation group and control group. The patients in the rehabilitation group were given physical training, and patients in the control group received routine treatment. The ADL was evaluated before, 1 and 3 months after treatment, respectively. RESULTS: One month after stroke, the abilities of grooming, toilet, transferring and dressing in the rehabilitation group were significantly improved as compared with those in the control group(p < 0.05). Three months after stroke, the abilities of walking and going up and down stairs in the rehabilitation group were also significantly different from those in the control group besides those mentioned above (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the abilities of bladder/rectum control, eating and bathing between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Early rehabilitation training is useful for improving most of ADL items in patients with hemiplegia.
