AIM: To study the influence of balance function on the recovery of limb function and the activities of daily living (ADL) in hemiplegic patients. METHODS: The balance function, limb mobility and ADL of 47 hemiplegic patients were evaluated with the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the tasks analysis approach (TAA) and the Barthel Index (BI) respectively. The relationships of balance function with limb mobility and ADL were analyzed. All the patients were randomly divided into observation group (n = 25) and control group (n = 22). Both groups received routine rehabilitative training, and besides, patients in the observation group received balance training. The balance function, limb mobility and ADL were compared before and after treatment. RESULTS: The scores of BBS, TAA and BI at admission were 27.17 +/- 14.47, 35.25 +/- 15.22 and 52.06 +/- 22.41 respectively, and balance function was positively correlated with limb mobility (r = 0.519, p = 0.008) and ADL (r = 0.530, p = 0.009). Before and after training, the scores of BBS, scores and BI were significantly different in both groups (p < 0.01), and those in the observation groups were better than those in the control groups (p < 0.01, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Balance function is closely related with limb function and ADL. The recovery of balance has the improving effect on the functional recovery of the hemiplegic patients.
