Three randomized groups out of a total of 60 patients with sprained ankles were compared. The patients received electrical stimulation, ultrasonic stimulation, or placebo treatment. The age and sex distributions were similar in the therapeutic groups. The investigation revealed that electrical stimulation had a positive effect on the swelling due to sprains as compared with placebo treatment, on the other hand, had no demonstrable effect on the course of recovery where sprained ankles were concerned.
