This double-blind cross-over study investigates the efficiency of a low power infrared laser therapy (GaAlAs, l = 904 nm), applied in 10 cases to persons suffering from rheumatic complaints. Each patient received 10 treatments, 5 of them without the infrared beam (placebo series). After the observation of pain behavior during a week without treatment, the therapy started randomized either with the placebo or the verum series. In order to evaluate the therapeutic effect, localization and intensity of pain were registered before and after each series. Four categories of pain, each comprising five degrees of intensity, were established. Results show a significant reduction of pain of movement and pain by pressure about 0.5 degrees of intensity after verum as well as placebo therapy. There is no indication that irradiation with infrared laser improves the pain reduction of about 20% observed after the placebo therapy.
