AIM: To investigate a point-selection method to improve the effects of acupuncture in treating peripheral facial paralysis(PFP) and decrease acupuncture amount. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with PFP were divided into the treatment group and control group randomly. The patients in treatment group were treated with method of 6-point acupuncture(3 pairs of matched acupuncture points were selected). The patients in control group were treated with routine point selection method(acupuncture points: Tits'ang, Chiach'e, etc of the affected sides were selected). RESULTS: The mean acupuncture amount that patients received in treatment group were 81 acupunctures once, more excellent than that in control group(130.5 acupunctures once). The acupuncture amount of each case was decreased by 38% in treatment group (p < 0.01). The cure rate of treatment group was a little better than that of control group, but without any statistical significance. CONCLUSION: The method of 6-point acupuncture is simple and effective for PFP, and is smaller usage of acupuncture, so it is better than routine-point-selection method.
