One hundred nearly symmetrically impacted wisdom teeth were surgically removed from 50 patients and the effect of combined cold compress, ultrasound (US) and diadynamic current (Didy) therapy on the post operative swelling was evaluated. The cold, US and Didy were applied immediately after the operation. The swelling was evaluated on the first and second postoperative days using a photographic method. Both lower third molars were removed during the same operation and physiotherapy was applied on one side only, while the other side served as a control. In 28 out of 50 patients there was less swelling on the test side than on the control side In 14 patients there was more swelling on the test side, in four patients the swelling was symmetrical and in four there was no measurable swelling. The conclusion of this study is that the combined cold, US and Didy therapy may reduce swelling if applied just after the operation, and this kind of therapy does not seem to be detremental to the wound healing process.
