The goal of the following field study was to research the effects of two different methods of physiotherapy on selected parameters of lung and respiratory function. 30 children and adolescents (average age 13 years) suffering from cystic fibrosis took part in the study. They were assigned randomly to two different programs. The first was conventional manual treatment, while the second was based on the 'active cycle of breathing technique' (ACBT). According to a covariance analysis, there were several significant differences which pointed to the superiority of the second method. These could be supported by the variables FVC, FEV1, PEFR, FEF50, and SaO2. In general, the active cycle proved to be both time-saving as well as efficient in this group of patients.
