The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise therapy upon certain cognitive and behavioral characteristics of institutionalized geriatric mental patients. Thirteen male and 17 female geriatric patients were divided info two treatment groups and one control group in a randomized block design which accounted for age, sex, and ward residence. The two treatment groups consisted of a conventional social therapy treatment and an exercise therapy treatment. Both treatments were administered for 12 weeks. Three cognitive tests and two behavioral scales were used to evaluate all three groups prior to treatment, after 8 weeks of treatment, and at the completion of treatment at 12 weeks. An analysis of variance showed that two of the three cognitive tests improved significantly for the exercise therapy group compared to the social therapy and control groups after the 12-week program. No significant differences were found in either of the two behavioral scales for the three groups as a result of the program.
