A randomized therapeutic trial was carried out for a comparison of the efficacy of Rheumasan-bath versus peat bath in patients with lumboischialgia. The sort of therapy did not allow a double blind study. 27 patients fulfilling the criteria of the defined therapeutic indication were treated over 3 weeks with daily baths; other physical measures and drugs were ordered following individual indications. This therapeutic strategy with baths as its chief component leads to a marked amelioration concerning the objective criteria of success (Schober's sign, finger-to-bottom-distance, Lasegues sign) as well as the subjective feeling of the patients of pain sensitivity and general condition and the final medical judgement. The statistical testing of the therapeutic hypothesis showed a significantly better improvement of Schober's sign by Rheumasan-baths. Numerous checks of blood pressure and heart rate before and after the baths and the analysis of hematological and biochemical variables before and after treatment gave no indication of side effects from Rheumasan-baths.
