The effectiveness of a new method of preventing pressure sores, the 'Air Wave System' (AWS), has been compared with that of the conventional large-cell ripple mattress. 31 matched pairs of patients at high risk of sores developing took part in the trial. The AWS was significantly more effective in preventing and reducing the severity of pressure sores and in promoting recovery from existing sores. Moreover, it was reliable and free from mechanical breakdown during the trial.
