systematic review

OBJECTIVE: This study concerns a systematic review of randomised clinical trials on the subject of whiplash and the manual therapeutic treatment of the whiplash. It is the aim of the study to create insight into the effectiveness of this treatment and of the methodological quality of the effect-studies available. METHOD: Literature for this systematic review has been collected by researching several literature databases. The search has resulted in 4 experimental studies that met the define criteria. These studies are judged on methodological quality by means of the 'Delphi-list'. RESULTS: The specific effect of mobilisations and/or manipulation has not been researched in any the studies. Also the methodological and inherent quality of the studies involved varies. Practical implications: Interventions that promote activity have a positive effect. Lack of exercise, even with the use of a collar, does not appear to have positive effects. CONCLUSIONS: Manual therapy is still no evidence-based therapy for patients suffering a whiplash trauma.
