During a stationary rehabilitation stay, 65 patients suffering from low back pain were allocated to two therapy groups by randomization, one with standardized physical therapy accompanied by music and instructions for relaxation, the other group without additional music application. An especially produced music for application with pain was to be heard once daily over a period of three weeks by CD and headphones. The global pain, established by the visual analogue scale (VAS), as well as the pain on pressure improved significantly. The Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for low back pain revealed that the subjective disability in the group with music therapy improved more distinctly than in the control group. It was interesting, that the music therapy showed a positive influence on the sleep disturbances under chronic low back pain, proven by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.
