AIM: To investigate the effects of exercise therapy in improving lumbar pain and quality of life of elderly patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). METHODS: Totally 64 LDH elderly patients were randomly divided into rehabilitation group (n = 36) and control group (n = 28). The patients in the control group received rest and physical therapy, and those in the rehabilitation group received physical therapy and exercise therapy. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the rate of satisfaction with the treatment between the rehabilitation group (72.22%) and the control group(46.36%) (Chi2 = 4.40, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Exercise therapy can improve life and work ability, symptom and physical sign of elder patients with LDH.
