Aim of the present work is to study the effects of intra-articular injection of hyaluronan versus physical therapy in treating knee osteoarthritis. For this purpose, 20 subjects affected by knee osteoarthritis were consecutively enrolled and randomly divided into injection group (IG) and physical therapy group (PTG). Some of these patients underwent other treatments for osteoarthritis previously. Subjects were evaluated according to pain and functional indexes, such as VAS and Lesquen and Samson Index before, at the end, at 3 and at 6 months after treatment. At the end of treatment both groups showed significative improvements in all the indexes, but at the 6 months follow-up only the injection group maintained these results, while in the physical therapy group the indexes returned to the pre-treatment condition.
