AIM: To study the clinical application of functional exercise of facial muscles and staged therapy in the treatment of facial nerve paralysis. METHODS: Seventy-four patients with facial nerve paralysis were randomly divided into two groups. Forty-three patients in the trial group were treated with functional exercise, drugs, physical therapy and acupuncture by stages; While 31 patients in the control group were treated with drug, physical therapy and acupuncture by stages. The results of pre-treatment and post-treatment of both groups were evaluated according to Portmann's Simple Scale so as to improve indices for a comparison between the two groups. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in the scores for the function of facial muscles between the two groups before treatment (2.953 +/- 1.825 versus 2.935 +/- 2.264). The scores obtained from the post-treatment trail group were 18.720 +/- 1.777, significantly higher than those from the control group (10.258 +/- 3.759, t = -11.632, p < 0.01), as well as the improvement index (trail group: 0.842 +/- 0.096; control group: 0.737 +/- 0.148, t = -3.659, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The effect of functional exercise and staged therapy on facial nerve paralysis is notable, and the compliance of the patients is good.
