In a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind study phase IV the efficacy of an external herbal remedy (massage oil; dolo-cyl oil) was examined in comparison to placebo in 30 healthy volunteers. After a standardized training four muscle regions were rubbed twice with the study oils and muscle pain and tension were examined in hemi-lateral comparison. The training developed not enough intensive to induce muscle pain and muscle tension in all patients. Therefore the number of evaluable patients was much lower than planned. Dolo-cyl oil showed to be significantly superior compared to placebo, when the primary parameter muscle pain summarized over all muscle regions was included into the statistical consideration. The separate analyses of each muscle region supported this result, but were statistically not significant. In addition, a trend in reducing muscle tension (muscle soreness) with dolo-cyl oil in comparison to placebo could be shown, without reaching statistical significance. During the observation period no side effects or intolerances occurred.
