We investigated the effect of endurance training on patients suffering from chronic bronchitis and emphysema, pleuritis tuberculosa and bacterial empyema, and on patients who had recently undergone lung resention. The training was adapted to the physical fitness on the individual patient; the intensity of effort was above the anaerobic threshhold, the patients cycled at least once a day and each training session lasted at least 10 to 15 minutes. There were no side effects. All patients had an improvement in aerobic capacity. In the case of patients with chronic obstructive we were able to demonstrate the effect of training in comparison with a sample of patients who underwent no training. We discuss the functional and anatomical effects of training on the basis of our results and reports in the literature. All in all, physical training is an effective form of therapy that can be carried out by outpatients, too. Nevertheless, more data are needed to quantify the results and to define the indications of aerobic training in lung patients.
