systematic review

The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of acupuncture as a treatment of migraine. A search for randomized controlled trials was made in the databases Ahmed, CINAHL, the Cochrane con-trolled trials register, Embase, Medline and PEDro. In total, the quality of nine trials, which passed the inclusion and exclusion criteria, was studied, using van Tulder's criteria list. A trial was classified to be of high quality if at least five of ten criteria were considered positive; otherwise, the quality was considered low. The result of every trial was considered positive, neutral or negative based on statistically significant differences between the randomized groups. Of nine included trials, five were of high and four were of low quality. The result was positive in five, neutral in one and negative in one. Two trials were excluded, as reports of statistical difference were missing. Analyses of the degree of evidence of the results revealed that there is strong evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in the management of migraine.
