The results of previous investigations on the pain relieving effect of transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TNS) during delivery were found to be contradictory and most materials were not controlled. The present study includes 25 normal primiparae of whom 12 received active TNS and a control group of 13 did not receive TNS. The pain scores and consumption of traditional analgesics in the two groups were compared. The consumption of analgesics was found to be significantly lower in the group receiving active TNS. It appears from this investigation that TNS is an inexpensive method of relieving pain which is almost free from adverse effects and thus probably suitable as a supplement to the usual analgesic methods. Further investigations on this subject are necessary.
