AIM: To observe the curative effect of assorted acupuncture and moxibustion therapy combined with self-made Chinese herb recipe for improving the limbs spasticity in patients with stroke. METHODS: A total of 80 stroke patients with limbs hemiplegia and spasticity (male: 43 cases; female: 37 cases) selected from the Treatment Center of Stroke and Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Second Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, from July 2001 to April 2004, were divided randomly into treatment group and control group (n = 40). Patients in treatment group received assorted acupuncture methods(yin-yang equilibrium acupuncture plus back acupuncture) combined with yiqi yangyin jiejing prescription, and patients in control group received simple routine acupuncture. All patients received the treatment as soon as diagnosis. Fugl-Meyer motor scale and Ashworth grading scale were used to evaluate the motor function and spasm in patients at admission and 6 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: According to the intention-to-treat, all 80 patients were involved in the result analysis. (1) The scores on motor function increased significantly after treatment in both treatment and control groups (treatment group: upper limb: 24.20 +/- 2.12, 13.35 +/- 1.98; lower limb: 24.80 +/- 2.74, 9.95 +/- 1.23; control group: upper limb: 19.25 +/- 1.97, 11.65 +/- 1.53; lower limb: 18.65 +/- 1.09, 10.20 +/- 1.76; t = 14.756 to 44.54, p < 0.05). (2) The difference scores on motor function between before and after treatment in treatment group increased significantly as compared with that in control group (upper limb: 10.85 +/- 1.09, 7.60 +/- 2.30; lower limb: 14.85 +/- 2.72, 8.45 +/- 1.32; t = -5.703, -9.472, p < 0.05). (3) The Ashworth grade of spasm after treatment improved significantly in treatment group as compared with control group (Ashworth I, II, III, IV grade was showed in 15, 15, 7 and 4 patients in treatment group, and 8, 9, 15 and 8 patients in control group, respectively; t = 3.897, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Treatment group treated with assorted acupuncture methods combined with traditional Chinese medicine for improving the limbs spasticity and recovery of motor function in patients with stroke is obviously superior to the simple routine acupuncture group.
