Although there are no reliable objective criteria for the measurement of pain, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effects of osteopathic manipulative procedures on muscle-tension headaches over months or years. There was a statistically significant difference in subjective ratings of pain relief between groups of patients treated by palpatory examination and osteopathic manipulation and by other measures. Data from this study and those reported elsewhere suggest that the central mechanism in muscle-contraction headache may involve modulation of autonomic reactivity by a cortical-limbic process.
