GOAL: To provide proof of the pain-relieving effects of the combined use of TENS and cryotherapy during physiotherapy treatment. METHODS: 21 patients, aged 40 to 60, suffering from knee pain, were assigned arbitrarily to one of three groups. Group I received 50 minutes of treatment with TENS at the knee joint. Group II received 20 minutes of cryotherapy at the knee joint. Group III was treated with the same TENS parameters as group I, except that cryotherapy was applied in addition during the last 20 minutes. Pain was evaluated according to the McGill pain questionnaire (translated into Portuguese) both before and after treatment. RESULTS: All 21 patients experienced pain relief. The degree of pain relief was about the same in groups I and II, while in group III it was significantly greater. CONCLUSION: Combined treatment with TENS and cryotherapy produced a greater degree of pain relief at the knee joint when compared to the isolated use of either TENS or cryotherapy alone.
