AIM: To compare the curative effect of acupuncture and auricular-point tapping and pressing therapy in the treatment of simple obesity. METHODS: The experiment was conducted in Hong kong Baptist University from February to April 2004. 40 patients with simple obesity were randomly divided into two groups: Acupuncture group (n = 20) and auricular-point group (n = 20). (1) Patients in the acupunture group received acupuncture at points of Tianshu, Zhongwan, Shuifen, Qihai, Guanyuan, Shuidao, Daheng, Zusanli, Fenglong, Sanyinjiao, Neiting and Quchi. Local obesity parts were acupunctured with 3 to 4 bullets, three times each week and 12 times as one course. (2) Points of stomach, Shenmen, endocrine, lung, Jidian and abdomen in patients of the auricular-point group were pressed with cowherb seeds, one ear was treated each time and two ears alternatively tapped for every 4 days. Body mass, waistline, hip circumference and index of body mass were measured 4 weeks after the treatment, and then compared with those before the treatment. RESULTS: Thirty-nine patients were involved in the analysis of results. (1) Body mass: it was lower in both groups than that before the treatment (73.83 +/- 4.90, 75.54 +/- 4.97 kg; 68.05 +/- 3.29, 69.33 +/- 3.34 kg, p < 0.01), and there were no differences between the two groups. (2) Waistline: it was smaller in both groups after treatment than those before the treatment (93.37 +/- 2.75, 97.74 +/- 2.58 cm; 90.73 +/- 2.29, 94.05 +/- 2.21 cm, p < 0.01), and no difference existed between two groups. (3) Hip circumference: it was smaller in both groups after treatment than that before treatment (103.18 +/- 2.07, 105.76 +/- 2.14 cm; 102.40 +/- 1.73, 104.55 +/- 1.95 cm, p < 0.01), and no difference existed between two groups. (4) Index of body mass: it was smaller in both groups after treatment than that before treatment (27.53 +/- 1.18, 28.22 +/- 1.21 kg/m2; 26.81 +/- 0.88, 27.30 +/- 0.90 kg/m2, p < 0.01), and no difference existed between two groups. CONCLUSION: Single use of acupuncture or auricular-point tapping and pressing therapy on patients with simple obesity can significantly reduce body mass, waistline, hip circumference and index of body mass, and the curative effects of two ways are similar.
