In a randomized prospective investigation of 93 patients with displaced Colles' fractures, treatment with a dorsal plaster slab below the elbow (S) was compared with a circular plaster above the elbow (C). After six weeks, the anatomical result in the S-group was better than in the C-group (76% compared to 58% in the excellent or good categories, 0.05 > p > 0.025). Otherwise, no significant anatomical or functional differences were observed in the range of movements, or in the rate of complications. Since treatment with a dorsal slab is simple and requires only a minimum of resources, this treatment is preferable. The results in the S-group do not seem to be inferior to any other treatment, eventhough dynamic splintage in supination has produced slightly better results.
