A controlled trial on the value of chest physiotherapy as an adjunct in the treatment of acute pneumonia has been undertaken in 171 patients admitted under the above diagnosis to a department for infectious diseases. Patients with other complicating pulmonary or muscle diseases were not included. Chest physiotherapy was given daily during the hospital stay by a physiotherapist. Neither the length of hospital stay nor the febrile period were shortened by physiotherapy. On the contrary in younger patients, smokers and patients with interstitial pneumonia, such treatment cause a prolonged febrile time. Although chest physiotherapy had no objectively recorded positive effect it was much appreciated by the patients. However, the conclusion was reached that such treatment is not warranted in patients with uncomplicated primary pneumonia.
