The lumbar back pain has a high prevalence, and instead of its multifatorial features, the structural mechanical-degenerative lumbar pain is the most common etiologic group. Both Bernard's diadynamic currents (BDC) and the iontophoresis have been declared as suitably therapeutic resources to treat the back pain, even with poor evidences supporting these ideas. The aim of the present study was to verily if the treatment with BDC+iontophoresis to provide better results than just the isolated BDC treatment to reduce the lumbar back pain. 18 subjects with clinical diagnosis of chronic lumbar back pain were selected and randomized in two groups. One group received only the BDC treatment and the other received BDC+iontophoresis with 1% hydrocortisone. The BDC currents employed in both groups were DF (5 minutes) and LP (7 minutes). The strength of the electrical stimulus was based on subject individual's sensitivity and the visual analog scale was used for the assessment of pain. The results showed the effectiveness from both techniques to reduce the lumbar pain, however, the isolated BDC group showed better average results. In conclusion, the BDC+iontophoresis did not show to be better than just the BDC isolated treatment to reduce the lumbar hack pain.
