In 92 male patients between the ages of 40 to 55 years who had survived their first myocardial infarction, a study was made of the effect of a rehabilitation programme for infarction patients. Exercise tolerance increased demonstrably in the rehabilitation group (42 patients) as well as in the control group 50 patients). However, the increase of exercise tolerance was better in the rehabilitation group than in the control group. This difference was statistically significant if the patients treated with beta-blocking were left out of (account). Rehabilitation had no demonstrable effect on the resumption of activities. However, rehabilitated patients more frequently resumed work completely. In over 50% of the cases, non-resumption of work was to be attributed to other factors than the myocardial infarction itself.
