OBJECTIVE: To determine whether or not hypertonia in children with cerebral palsy decreases after standing for 30 minutes in a tilt-table. Hypertonia was defined as the resistance against passive movement. METHODS: Eighteen children with cerebral palsy were measured before and after standing for 30 minutes in three different tilt-tables or sitting for 30 minutes sitting (control), using a cross-over design. Resistance against passive extension and flexion of the knee was measured with a dynamometer. Data were compared to control data. Resistance against flexion as well as extension is expressed as the mean resistance and the differences were estimated using 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Increase in muscle tone was found in two out of three tilt-tables compared to the control measurement. Compared to the control data, the mean changes in tone for extension for tilt-tables A, B, and C were 2.57 N (95% CI -3.47, 8.59), 3.0 N (95% CI -4.09, 10.08), and 1.44 N (95% CI -4.89, 7.77). For flexion, the changes compared to control were 1.56 N (95% CI -2.71, 5.82), 0.40 N (95% CI -3.65, 4.44) and -0.86 (95% BI -5.72, 4.00). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that neither statistically significant nor clinically relevant differences can be expected. There was no difference between the three tilt-tables.
