OBJECTIVE: To evaluate recovery effects of pursed lips and diaphragm type breathing exercises to patients with chronic cor pulmonale in recovery period. METHOD: 88 patients with chronic cor pulmonale in recovery period were randomized into 2 groups, exercise group (46 cases) and control group (42 cases). The exercise group does pursed lips and diaphragm type breathing exercises. The control group takes placebo. To valuate PaO2, PaCO2, lung function, 6 minutes walking distance (6MD), the level of the plasma endothelin-1 and quality of life of patients before two groups beginning and after two groups end. RESULT: The PaO2, lung function(VC, FEV1%) and 6 MD were significantly higher, the PaCO2 and the level of the plasma endothelin -1 were significantly lowered and the quality of life was significantly improved after rehabilitation treatment, p < 0.05. They were not improved in the control group. CONCLUSION: Pursed lips and diaphragm type breathing exercises is able to improve PaO2, PaCO2, lung function, 6 minutes walking distance (6 MD), the level of the plasma endothelin-1 and quality of life of patients with chronic cor pulmonale in recovery period.
