New Zealand Journal of Physiotherapy 1995 Aug;23(2):23-30
systematic review

PURPOSE: Osteoarthritis (OA), which is virtually universal among the ageing population, frequently affects the weight-bearing knee joint. OA of the knee often leads to considerable pain and functional disability. Individuals with this disease present with reduced aerobic capacity and exercise endurance, and many are inactive. Traditional treatment has typically advised against increased activity. Because of the numerous potential health benefits of aerobic exercise, there is increasing interest in its use in the treatment of the individual with OA of the knee. This literature review critically examines the efficacy of aerobic exercise for treating OA of the knee. In addition, this paper provides physiotherapists with direction for future research in this area.
