BACKGROUND: Both ageing and diminished physical affect the health status, functional capacity, and performance of activities of daily living of frail older adults living in nursing homes. Several studies have shown associations between disability and strength, balance, and endurance. In this study the effects of a light-intensity training programme on physical fitness and disability in frail older adults were investigated. METHOD: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) included 36 frail older adults living in a number of nursing homes. Outcome variables were disability, strength, functional capacity, balance, agility, and walking speed. RESU LTS. Participation in the exercise programme significantly improved performance of activities of daily living by frail older adults. No significant effects were found on strength, balance, and endurance. Discriminant analysis showed the increase in functional capacity to be associated with an increase in walking speed, leg strength, and agility. CONCLUSION: Participation in a low-intensity exercise programme improves the functional capacity of frail older adults.
