This study of seventy-seven patients with hemiplegia compared the effectiveness of programs of progressive resistive exercise, simple active exercise, and training in activities of daily living in attaining functional independence. Patients were under treatment for one to two months. Results showed that (1) more patients who received progressive resistive exercise made significant improvement in activities of daily living than did those receiving active exercise or activities-of-daily-living training only following one month of treatment, and (2) most patients on an intensive rehabilitation program demonstrated the greatest improvement during the first month of treatment and gradually leveled off in improvement.
