Teaching and counseling programs are used to further promote and facilitate changes in behavior with regard to risk factors. However, the effect of exercise combined with teaching-counseling programs has not been examined critically. To examine this question, patients participating in a controlled randomized trial of early cardiac rehabilitation (exercises) were studied for the possible added effects of a teaching-counseling program on cigarette smoking, dietary intake of selected food items, and weight changes.
