Twenty-four patients with chronic airways obstruction entered an exercise tolerance training class. They attended the physiotherapy department weekly and performed the same exercises daily at home. Of this number, 16 completed the study. They were trained to their peak performance and then entered one of two groups to which they had been randomly allocated at the outset. One group of eight patients continued to attend weekly and also exercise at home; the other group only exercised at home. Assessments were made initially, approximately one month later, and then at two-monthly intervals to the end. The results are described in this paper.
