AIM: To observe the effect of initiative motion on cervical headache. METHODS: Patients with cervical headache were selected from the Department of Orthopedics between August 2000 and August 2005 with the inclusive criteria: (1) those diagnosed as cervical headache according to the diagnosis standards; (2) those aged 19 to 68 years; Zthose willing to join the initiative motion training; and the exclusive criteria: (1) those with severe primary diseases in cardio-cerebrovascular, liver, renal and hematopoietic system and psychotic; (2) those with spinal inflammatory diseases, paravertebral tumor and tubercle diseases; (3) those not treated according to the regulation or without complete data. 152 patients were involved and randomly divided into test group and control group with 76 cases in each group. The test group performed the initiative motion twice daily besides traction, massage, Chinese herb taken orally and external use. The control group was only given traction, massage, Chinese herb taken by mouth and external use. Evaluation criteria of efficacy: If the symptoms and positive signs are improved and the electromyogram of bilateral upper limbs shows an improvement from obvious neural damage to ordinary damage, it is effective. RESULTS: The total effective rate of the test group was 97% and the control group was 82%. The differences were statistically significant (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The initiative motion training can guide the patients to perform the rehabilitative training so as to prevent and cure the cervical headache.
