Thirty-four patients were treated with pulsed ultraound, and the treatment results were compared with those for the 15 patients in the placebo group. All had been suffering from chronic pain in masticatory muscles for at least six months. Tenderness to palpation of the masticatory muscles was determined, and the maximal interincisal distance was measured. The subjective result of treatment reported by the patient was recorded. There was no difference between the groups regarding tenderness to palpation of the masticatory muscles, but the maximal interincisal distance increased more in the test groups than in the placebo group. Thus the effect of ultrasound could not be differentiated from the placebo effect.
