Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is a mechanical method of delivering compression to the upper and lower extremities. This technique has been used to treat leg ulcers and limb swelling due to lymphedema and to prevent deep venous thrombosis. The effectiveness of IPC as a treatment for venous ulcers is still unproved. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of IPC in the treatment of venous ulcers comparing the healing rate with IPC versus local treatment. 80 out patients with confirmed pure venous ulcers participated in the study. They were randomized in two groups to receive eight IPC and local treatment or local treatment alone. The main outcome measures were complete healing of ulcers and the change in the area of the referent ulcer over the six month observation period.
