During a period of one year, 82 patients from the outpatient clinic were randomized to plaster of Paris or Hexcelite below-knee walking cast. The duration of splinting, complications, sequelae, comfort and the expenses were registered. Eleven patients were lost to follow-up. The duration of splinting was identical in the two groups. There were sgnificantly fewer complications (p < 0.05) and sequelae (p < 0.05) in the Hexcelite-group. The comfort was significantly better (p < 0.001) in the Hexcelite-group. The average total expenses were the same in the two groups. On the basis of these results, we recommend Hexcelite for below-knee walking casts.
