The effects of laser and ultraviolet light irradiation on the healing of chronic ulcers are compared in this case series. Six subjects all with chronic ulcers which had persisted for between 5 months to 30 years, and which had shown no beneficial reaction to medical treatment, were randomly assigned to one of the two modalities. The ulcers were treated 3 x per week for 4 weeks. Assessment (visual description and calculation of the percentage decrease in perimeter and surface area) was done by an objective observer at the end of the study. The effects of both modalities, and the advantages and disadvantages of each are briefly discussed.
