Thirty patients with significant rheumatoid arthritis were entered a double blind study for the efficacy of laser therapy. The affected joints were irradiated with the helium-neon laser LG-75 (at a wavelength of 632 nm and power at the surface of the irradiated joint of 1 to 1.5 mW/cm2). Disadjusted LG-75 with a common incandescent lamp a simple red filter was used for placebo irradiation. The patients treated with laser rays manifested a significant pain alleviation, a decrease in the degree and duration of rigidity and in the articular index. The number of inflamed joints diminished and the hand strength increased. Placebo irradiation did not produce any essential shifts in the patients' status. Study of the biopsy specimens taken form the synovial membrane of the knee joint (10 patients) treated with laser rays discovered the reduction of the exudative and infiltrative manifestations and enhancements of the synovial membrane fibrosis.
