INTRODUCTION: Postural drainage (PD) is one of the bronchial hygiene techniques more old and widely used in the chest physiotherapy, which has the purpose of assist the removal of sputum by the gravity effect, especially in diseases with copious sputum. OBJECTIVE: Carry out a review about the PD efficacy isolated or in association with other techniques in different clinical conditions. METHODS: National and international studies were analyzed between 1960 to 2007. CONCLUSION: The PD is beneficial to increase the mucus clearance, but its effects still remain controversial when combined with other modalities.
