AIM: It is clinically verified that delayed union and nonunion can be treated by inductance coupling and radio frequency. This study was designed to evaluate the mechanism of inductance coupling and radio frequency on delayed union and nonunion. METHODS: Totally 50 patients with nonunion and delayed union after operation were enrolled at Third Hospital, Hebei Medical University from March 2004 to March 2007. The patients in the experimental group received inductance coupling treatment (60 min/time, twice a day, 30 days as a course) with XT-400A instrument produced by Tianjin Xitong Electronic Equipment Co Ltd combined with the routine therapy. Simultaneously, they received radio frequency physiotherapy (15 min/time, once a day, 30 days as a course) with PWH-A microwave apparatus produced by Bejing Kaishili Electronic Co Ltd. The patients in the control group received conventional treatment. Bony callus growth was observed by x-ray at days 30 and 120 respectively. RESULTS: Totally 50 patients were involved in the result analysis. Bone callus growth of experimental group was significantly better than the control group at days 30 and 120 (p < 0.05). No side effect or adverse reaction occurred. CONCLUSION: It is reliable to treat induce osteogenes is and restore continuity of the bone by inductance coupling and radio frequency.
