OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of CureTape on subjects with primary dysmenorrhoea. METHODS: This quantitative experimental study involved 51 young women aged 18 to 30 years with severe menstrual pain who were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Pain was measured during four menstruation cycles by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain. No intervention was provided during the first two menstruation cycles, but during the third and fourth cycles the women in the experimental group were treated with CureTape, according to the concept of Kenzo Kase, and women int he control group were treated with placebo tape, which was placed on the abdomen and low back. RESULTS: The control and experimental interventions led to significant decrease in pain (experimental group, p < 0.001; control group p- 0.026), but the decrease was significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group (intervention group, 1.6 +/- 1.22 and control group 0.73 +/- 1.35; p = 0.025). In a sub-analysis, CureTape was found to have a greater effect in women who experienced more severe pain (VAS pain > 5.0cm) and in women who did not use oral contraceptives. CONCLUSION: CureTape appears to be effective in providing pain relief in women with primary dysmenorrhoea.
