Varicose veins occurring during pregnancy are a common and distressing complaint. Surgical intervention during the peurperium is inadvisable and compressive sclerotherapy has been utilized as a safe alternative method of management. In order to assess its efficacy, a random study was conducted at the Queen Victoria Hospital to compare results of sclerotherapy with conservative use of elastic stockings. Forty-five cases were submitted to injection therapy and the results compared with those obtained in 58 patients treated conservatively. In addition, 39 non-random patients were treated by sclerotherapy and are also included in this study. The results of management by sclerotherapy were far superior to those of the conservative treatment. Symptopmatic improvement in particular was noteworthy. No serious complications were encountered and the technique has been adopted as a routine service at the vein clinic. Attention is drawn to the need for a consistent and meticulous technique.
