AIM: To explore the effect of music-sport therapy in improving the insight and behavioral disturbance in schizophrenics. METHODS: Totally 116 patients with schizophrenia were divided into control group (n = 58) and study group (n = 58) with the method of random assortment. All patients received treatment of anti-psychotics, besides, patients in the study group were treated with music and sports at the same time. The two groups were both evaluated by the brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS), insight and treatment attitude questionnaire (ITAQ) and nurses' observation scale for inpatient evaluation (NOSIE) before and 3 months after treatment. RESULTS: The scores of BPRS, ITAQ, and NOSIE were not significantly different between two groups before the treatment (t = 1.36, 0.98, 1.79, p > 0.05), while there were obvious differences 3 months after treatment in scores of BPRS and ITAQ (t = 4.17, 5.67, p < 0.01), and the differences in subfactor scores and total scores of NOSIE were significant (t = -4.94 -2.42, p < 0.05 to 0.01). CONCLUSION: Music-sport therapy contributes to the recovery of insight and the improvement of behavioral disturbance and psychiatric symptoms of schizophrenia.
